ATC Letter of Agreement
AMA IN ACTION Advocating for Members
The FAA Reauthorization Act of 2018 requires all flying sites within controlled airspace to have a鈥痩etter of agreement (LOA)鈥痺ith鈥痑ir traffic control (ATC)鈥痜acilities.鈥 AMA is working directly鈥痺ith the FAA to prioritize this work and ensure鈥痶hat鈥痽ou have the protections you need to continue to fly.鈥疕owever, we need some additional information鈥痶o accomplish this.
In June 2019, emails were sent to club officers to ensure correct completion of an FAA questionnaire to obtain the information needed鈥痜or this LOA. Multiple submissions for the same flying site will delay the process of an LOA, so the email was sent only to club officers to coordinate this effort.
The FAA plans to have an airspace authorization system (LAANC) for recreational flights operational later this summer. Until then, the only path to fly legally in controlled airspace is at a flying site with an LOA in place. During this new LOA process, the FAA will honor any existing verbal or written agreement the club has with local ATC.

In addition, modelers must still remain vigilant and continually scan the sky for manned aircraft. Read AMA's See and Avoid Guidance.
