The Las Vegas Soaring Club (LVSC) #3308 is a Gold Leader Club and our Club of the Month for June 2025. The Las Vegas Soaring Club was established in 1992 and has become one of the oldest and largest RC clubs in the Southwest adjacent to the Red Rock Recreation Area. The Desert Sportsman Rifle and Pistol Club (DSRPC) granted LVSC use of 21 acres directly across Highway 159 and it has been growing ever since. The club started out with only eight members and has now grown to over 140 pilots.
Improvements to the club include: a larger driveway & parking lot, pit/work tables, helicopter/quad & DLG pads separate from runway, locking gate, winch/retriever system for the soaring planes, and an additional 250' to extend the original runway (350' by 35' made of Geotextile). To help with costs, an AMA Flying Site Development/Improvement Grant of $452 was awarded to the club to assist in these upgrades. The club purchased and installed a commercial weather station to be accessed by both the LVSC and DSRCP members (weatherlink.com)
As part of our commitment to the public and the RC hobby, LVSC offers free instructional flying lessons at the field. The Bob Pickens Junior Pilot Program was created to bring younger members into the hobby. Founded by Barry M. in 2014, the Junior Program has become an integral part of the LVSC experience. Funds raised throughout the year provide any needed assistance to the youngsters that might otherwise preclude them from participating in the program. This program seeks to emulate that enthusiasm for aviation and youth by providing a structured entry program for youngsters up to the age of 18 into the hobby of RC flying.
LVSC is also active in co-sponsoring events with other clubs, offers regular Swap Meets, and conducts classes and flight training with the Civil Air Patrol, local schools, Boy Scout troops and other organizations.
