Greensboro RC Aeromodelers (GRAMs) #481 is an AMA Gold Leader Club located in Browns Summit, NC. The club operates on land provided by Guilford County which surrounds the city of Greensboro. Established back in 1959, the club has operated at three other locations until they moved to their current flying site back in 2007.
The club is not large, only 50 members, but has a "...close-knit, family feeling group who are passionate about the hobby" as described by their club president, Duane Gentry. Since receiving the land from the county, club members have added several amenities to the site including: Club house, covered patio, safety wire fence, bleachers for guests, run-up stands, and a beautifully maintained grass runway.
GRAMs hosts fun events every month. The schedule includes: Spring Fun-Fly (April), Warbirds & Classics (May), Night/Electric Fun-Fly (June/July), Fall Fun-Fly (Sept.), Founders Celebrations (Oct.), Black Friday Fun-Fly (Nov.), and a Club Christmas Dinner.
They also support their local community. Several members visit the local elementary and middle schools and provide Aviation Show & Tell programs to students. Members also collect old issues of 'Model Aviation' at the clubhouse and donate them to schools and retirement centers. The club provides access to their flying site for the A&T State University Aeronautics Program for aircraft testing. One of their fund raising events is hosting a fun-fly to support the Spirit & Truth Church of Worship. The church receives all the money collected from pilot & lunch fees ($300-$400).
The club president would like to acknowledge a very special founding member, Roy Johnson. Roy is over 80 years old and joined the club back in 1959. He is active in the club and participates in nearly every event, including a relief project to help victims from Hurricane Helene in Asheville, NC. Roy is true example of "I am the AMA". Thank you, Roy!
