The Silent Electric Flyers of San Diego (SEFSD), Club #3078, is the AMA Club of the Month for September 2025. SEFSD is an AMA Gold Leader Club that is situated right next to Seaworld San Diego. The club was established more than 30 years ago and has nearly 400 registered members.
The club first began flying at Robb Field and moved to South Shores. They used a a location northeast of their current runway but were eventually moved to avoid 'Least Tern' nesting grounds.
What they do not have for field amenities they make up for club activities. The clay/sand runway is 450' x 50' and is kept in good condition. They received an AMA Flying Site Improvement grant in the past to upgrade the fence separating the active runway from the pit area. There are several workbenches for pilots to use and a large parking lot for club members and visitors.
The numerous fun-fly & contests keep them very busy. Their weekend racing events include: T-28, Popwing, FPV multi-rotor, F5B/D, and Electroglide. You can find these racing rules on their website. They also provide access to their field for students at UCSD for their Design-Build-Fly collegiate competition. They are also active in local charitable contributions donating 40 blankets to lower income seniors every year.
Their mission statement reads: "The objective of the Silent Electric Flyers of San Diego is to promote and further the technology of electric powered R/C aeromodeling: encourage competition in Electric Soaring, Pylon Racing, FAI-F5B/D, Scale, Old Timer, and Pattern Electric categories by hosting major Industry sponsored events and sanctioning 鈥淔un-Fly鈥 types of contests; provide forums for the exchange of technical information, instruction and experience; and participate in demonstrations of electric propulsion in area wide model aviation events."
